IEC 60601-1

Medical electrical equipment, Part 1: General requirements for basic safety and essential performance

In plain words

What it covers.

The core safety standard for medical electrical equipment. A manufacturer must show that the device protects patients and staff from electric shock, fire, heat, moving parts and other hazards, and that its essential performance (the things it must keep doing safely) is maintained. It is a design and type-test standard: it is used to approve a design, not to test devices in the hospital.

Who uses it: Device manufacturers, test houses and notified bodies during design and approval; clinical engineers when reading specifications or setting acceptance criteria.

A summary written by BMEssentia for learning, not the text of the standard. Always work from the current official edition and the manufacturer's instructions.

It covers

  • Protection against electric shock
  • Classes I and II and applied part types B, BF and CF
  • Leakage current limits
  • Means of protection (MOOP and MOPP)
  • Mechanical, thermal and fire hazards
  • Essential performance
  • Risk management link to ISO 14971
  • Programmable electrical systems (PEMS)

Key points

What engineers need to know.

  • Class I equipment relies on a protective earth; Class II relies on double or reinforced insulation with no earth.
  • Applied parts are typed B, BF or CF; CF is for direct cardiac contact and has the tightest leakage limits.
  • Type CF patient leakage is limited to 10 µA in normal condition and 50 µA in single fault condition.
  • Two means of patient protection (2 MOPP) are needed between mains and the patient.
  • Every requirement is tied to the manufacturer's ISO 14971 risk management file.
  • Essential performance is what the device must keep doing so that risk stays acceptable.
  • Collateral standards (60601-1-x) and particular standards (60601-2-x) add to or change Part 1.
