IEC 62353
Medical electrical equipment, Recurrent test and test after repair of medical electrical equipment
In plain words
What it covers.
The standard used in hospitals to test medical electrical equipment safely in service: before first use, at planned maintenance and after repair. It sets the visual inspection, protective earth resistance, insulation and leakage current tests and their limits, and how to record them. It is designed to be done in a workshop without the special lab set-up that IEC 60601-1 needs.
Who uses it: Clinical engineers, biomedical technicians and service engineers for acceptance, planned maintenance and post-repair tests.
A summary written by BMEssentia for learning, not the text of the standard. Always work from the current official edition and the manufacturer's instructions.
It covers
- Visual inspection
- Protective earth resistance
- Insulation resistance
- Equipment leakage (direct, differential or alternative method)
- Applied part leakage
- Functional test
- Documentation and evaluation
Key points
What engineers need to know.
- Always start with a visual inspection: damaged cables and cases fail before any meter is used.
- Protective earth resistance limit is 0.3 ohm for a detachable or fixed mains cable up to 3 m.
- Class I equipment leakage limit is 500 µA; Class II is 100 µA (direct or differential method).
- Applied part leakage limits: type BF 5000 µA, type CF 50 µA (alternative method, mains on applied part).
- The test order matters: earth bond first, because leakage tests are unsafe on a device with a broken earth.
- A failed result means the device is withdrawn and labelled, not used until repaired and retested.
- Results must be recorded so trends can be seen over the device's life.
