Model note · Insulin Pump

Medtronic MiniMed 780G insulin pump

The MiniMed 780G is a tubed, durable insulin pump powered by a single AA battery, with an LCD and keypad and a reservoir feeding an infusion set. Its SmartGuard automated mode runs an embedded algorithm that adjusts basal delivery to a glucose setpoint and can give automatic corrections, using Medtronic or other compatible CGMs over Bluetooth. Recalls show three recurring themes: impact damage, battery cap and power issues, and software faults that raise numbered pump errors.

Safety

Safety warnings from the record.

  • Changes in air pressure during take off and landing can cause extra or reduced insulin delivery with MiniMed pumps. Source
  • Raising or lowering the pump relative to the infusion site can over or under deliver insulin because of hydrostatic pressure changes. Source
  • An early software fault after large quick boluses risked over delivery if users were unaware of active insulin. Source

Not covered: The 510(k) comparison table extracts with shifted columns, so values were matched carefully but should be checked against the 780G user guide. The full list of pump error numbers and their meanings is in the user guide, which was not read; only errors named in recalls are listed. Reservoir size and battery life were not found. MAUDE counts are not failure rates. The manufacturerUrl points to the FDA summary.
