GE Discovery MI and Discovery MI Gen 2 digital PET/CT

Discovery MI is GE HealthCare's digital PET/CT, pairing a silicon photomultiplier PET detector with a Revolution EVO CT. It was first cleared in 2016, and the Gen 2 version added a six ring, 30 cm axial field of view. Ring count sets coverage and sensitivity, so units in the field differ widely in performance. It also runs as a standalone diagnostic CT, so CT and PET service issues both apply.

Recalls

Known FDA recalls.

  • Z-1749-20192019-02-12

PET/CT table stop without stopping X-ray exposure (Discovery MI; Z-1750-2019 covers Discovery MI DR).

    FDA record
  • Z-2580-20182018-05-24

GE supplied A1 electrical panel may not be wired properly to the partial system UPS.

    FDA record
  • Z-2193-20172017-05-19

Scan could start before the prescribed delay completed.

Safety

Safety warnings from the record.

  • A table stop without an exposure stop can give unintended radiation dose to the same body region. Source
  • A scan that starts before its prescribed delay may miss contrast timing and need repeating, adding dose. Source

Not covered: No timing resolution, spatial resolution, bore size, weight or power figure was found in an official GE document that could be opened, so they are left out; sensitivity is GE's marketing figure for the 30 cm system only. Service manuals and error codes are not public, so errorCodes is empty. FDA indexes several recalls under the misspelling Discovery Ml; recall text was read through openFDA because the FDA recall pages returned errors at drafting time. MAUDE data are too sparse to show a trend.
