Ready Technician:Critical Care

Ventilators, monitoring networks, infusion systems and balloon pumps in the ICU.

For: Hospitals that need technicians who can support ICU life support: ventilators, transport and oxygen, balloon pumps, ECMO, monitoring and point-of-care gases.

Before you start: Ready Technician (core) completed or in progress: this branch assumes the core's competencies and builds the Critical Care specialism on them.

What you'll be able to do

The job, done properly.

  • Diagnoses ventilation problems in circuits, humidification, interfaces and sensors
  • Prepares transfers with correct oxygen and battery arithmetic
  • Supports balloon pumps and ECMO: timing, triggers, drives, power and the hand crank
  • Finds the broken assumption behind ICU measurement faults
  • Triages interleaved ICU failures by patient risk

The story

BMEssentia Medical City Hospital, the ICU (Medical Rooms 1-7, L6), CCU and the cath lab.

Dr Amira HaddadHead of Clinical Engineering · your mentor (a character in the track)
“Know your sensor's physics. A hot-wire anemometer cannot tell flowing gas from evaporating water.”

Proof

Only evidence counts.

A step is done when there is evidence: a simulation score, a saved work document, a passed check or a signed observation. Opening a page never ticks anything.

  • Before and afterThe same baseline check on day one and in the final week, scored per competency.
  • Mastery, not attendanceBelow-threshold competencies route to their named remediation and a re-check.
  • The audit packYour weekly work documents and capstones, ready for a supervisor, an employer or an inspector.

The certificate

BMEssentia Certificate of Completion: Ready Technician, Critical Care

It names the track and the level you completed. Your portfolio holds the work behind it.

  • All weeks' required items done
  • Final check at or above the level's pass mark
  • At least 6 of 8 branch competencies at mastery
  • Capstone graded 60 or above (core tracks) or every branch device signed off (clinical branches)
  • Institutions: supervisor or educator sign-off; individuals: self-assessed with evidence, shown as such

ICU life-support readiness review

Review the readiness of your ICU's life-support fleet (ventilators, transport ventilators, balloon pumps, ECMO): spares, batteries tested on battery, retention of drives and connectors, configurations, consumables.

Evidence it gives: Readiness evidence for ICU life-support equipment.

Transfer safety: the oxygen and power audit

Audit every transport ventilator, monitor and pump used for transfers: cylinder settings, oxygen arithmetic in the checklist, battery runtime, charging contacts, mounts.

Evidence it gives: Transfer equipment audit with corrections.

ICU measurement casebook

Document three real ICU measurement or life-support faults you handled (anonymised), each with the broken assumption, the evidence and the prevention.

Evidence it gives: Traced corrective maintenance in critical care.

Three levels

Easy, Medium or Hard.

A baseline check on day one places you, or you choose. The competencies are the same at every level; the support and the pressure change.

Easy

Baseline under 50% · simulations at Foundation

Worked examples first, then guided practice. Simulations at Foundation difficulty with the coach on and marking as you go. Fewer cases per week (the extra and hard-only cases are hidden). Mastery thresholds 10 points lower.

Medium

Baseline 50% to 74% · simulations at Practitioner

Guided to independent: the standard track. Simulations at Practitioner difficulty, the coach hidden but available, the extra cases each week from the middle of the track, mastery thresholds as stated.

Hard

Baseline 75% and above · simulations at Expert

Independent and interleaved: every simulation at Expert difficulty, all extra and hard-only cases, stricter mastery thresholds (+5), and time pressure.
