Safe Device Use: Clinical Staff Competency:ICU

Ventilators, blood gas, arterial monitoring and moving critically ill patients.

For: ICU nurse educators who must document competence on ventilators, temporary pacing, invasive monitoring, point-of-care testing and mechanical support.

Before you start: Safe Device Use (core) completed or in progress: this branch assumes the core's competencies and builds the ICU specialism on them.

What you'll be able to do

The job, done properly.

  • Responds to ventilator alarms patient-first and hand-ventilates when in doubt
  • Cares for patients on temporary pacing: capture, connections, battery
  • Levels, zeroes and troubleshoots invasive pressure
  • Uses the blood gas analyser with correct samples, identity and QC
  • Recognises IABP and ECMO emergencies and calls fast
  • Keeps alarms heard during system downtime

The story

“If you cannot work out what the alarm means within seconds and the patient is getting worse, take the patient off the ventilator and bag. Then think.”

Proof

Only evidence counts.

A step is done when there is evidence: a simulation score, a saved work document, a passed check or a signed observation. Opening a page never ticks anything.

  • Before and afterThe same baseline check on day one and in the final week, scored per competency.
  • Mastery, not attendanceA competency below threshold routes to its remediation and a re-check before sign-off.
  • The audit packYour weekly work documents and capstones, ready for a supervisor, an employer or an inspector.

The certificate

BMEssentia Certificate of Completion: Safe Device Use, ICU

It names the track and the level you completed. Your portfolio holds the work behind it.

  • Every module of this ward branch completed with its quiz at or above the level's pass mark
  • Each ward device signed off by the ward educator (institutions) or self-assessed with evidence (individuals, shown as such)
  • Final check at or above the pass mark
  • Capstone graded 60 or above
  • The certificate lists each device with its sign-off date and its renewal date (12 months)

ICU bed-space readiness walk

Walk every ICU bed space: bag-valve, oxygen, suction, alarm volumes, transducer set-ups, sockets and device labels; report findings.

Evidence it gives: Bed-space readiness and alarm audibility.

Teach one device to a new starter

Teach a new ICU starter one device using your quick card and observe their first alarm response.

Evidence it gives: Peer teaching on ICU devices.

Downtime drill

Run a downtime drill for loss of central monitoring on your unit with the nurse in charge.

Evidence it gives: Business continuity for clinical alarms.

Three levels

Easy, Medium or Hard.

A baseline check on day one places you, or you choose. The competencies are the same at every level; the support and the pressure change.

Easy

Baseline under 50% · simulations at Foundation

Worked examples first, then guided practice. Simulations at Foundation difficulty with the coach on and marking as you go. Fewer cases per week (the extra and hard-only cases are hidden). Mastery thresholds 10 points lower.

Medium

Baseline 50% to 74% · simulations at Practitioner

Guided to independent: the standard track. Simulations at Practitioner difficulty, the coach hidden but available, the extra cases each week from the middle of the track, mastery thresholds as stated.

Hard

Baseline 75% and above · simulations at Expert

Independent and interleaved: every simulation at Expert difficulty, all extra and hard-only cases, stricter mastery thresholds (+5), and time pressure.
