Safe Device Use: Clinical Staff Competency:General wards

Infusion pumps, monitors, beds and the everyday devices of a general ward.

For: Ward educators on medical, surgical and elderly care wards who must document competence beyond the core devices: patients' own pumps, ward monitoring, nebulisers and the infusion devices patients take home.

Before you start: Safe Device Use (core) completed or in progress: this branch assumes the core's competencies and builds the General Wards specialism on them.

What you'll be able to do

The job, done properly.

  • Records and controls patients' own insulin pumps safely
  • Monitors the right patient with clean ECG and patient-specific limits
  • Uses nebulisers with the right driving gas and clean chambers
  • Sets up and checks ambulatory and elastomeric infusion devices and teaches patients
  • Recognises faults from electrodes, cables, sockets and storage
  • Keeps ward devices charged and reports failures

Proof

Only evidence counts.

A step is done when there is evidence: a simulation score, a saved work document, a passed check or a signed observation. Opening a page never ticks anything.

  • Before and afterThe same baseline check on day one and in the final week, scored per competency.
  • Mastery, not attendanceA competency below threshold routes to its remediation and a re-check before sign-off.
  • The audit packYour weekly work documents and capstones, ready for a supervisor, an employer or an inspector.

The certificate

BMEssentia Certificate of Completion: Safe Device Use, General Wards

It names the track and the level you completed. Your portfolio holds the work behind it.

  • Every module of this ward branch completed with its quiz at or above the level's pass mark
  • Each ward device signed off by the ward educator (institutions) or self-assessed with evidence (individuals, shown as such)
  • Final check at or above the pass mark
  • Capstone graded 60 or above
  • The certificate lists each device with its sign-off date and its renewal date (12 months)

Ward device walk

Walk the ward for a week: patients' own devices recorded, monitors admitted to the right patient, electrode storage, nebuliser chambers, infusion devices going home, sockets and charging.

Evidence it gives: Ward equipment readiness.

Patients' own devices on the ward

Audit every patient with diabetes for a week: pump or sensor recorded, control decision, insulin plan.

Evidence it gives: Safe management of patients' own devices.

Teach a device a patient takes home

Teach two patients or carers an ambulatory or elastomeric device using the card, with teach-back, and follow up by phone.

Evidence it gives: Patient education for home devices.

Three levels

Easy, Medium or Hard.

A baseline check on day one places you, or you choose. The competencies are the same at every level; the support and the pressure change.

Easy

Baseline under 50% · simulations at Foundation

Worked examples first, then guided practice. Simulations at Foundation difficulty with the coach on and marking as you go. Fewer cases per week (the extra and hard-only cases are hidden). Mastery thresholds 10 points lower.

Medium

Baseline 50% to 74% · simulations at Practitioner

Guided to independent: the standard track. Simulations at Practitioner difficulty, the coach hidden but available, the extra cases each week from the middle of the track, mastery thresholds as stated.

Hard

Baseline 75% and above · simulations at Expert

Independent and interleaved: every simulation at Expert difficulty, all extra and hard-only cases, stricter mastery thresholds (+5), and time pressure.
