Aircraft Medical McGRATH MAC video laryngoscope

The McGRATH MAC is a portable, battery powered video laryngoscope used to aid tracheal intubation in theatres, emergency departments, intensive care and pre hospital care. A small colour screen sits on the handle and a camera and LED at the tip of the CameraStick are covered by a single use sterile blade, either Macintosh shaped or the hyperangulated X3. With a Macintosh blade it can still be used for direct view if the camera fails but the light works.

Safety

Safety warnings from the record.

  • Recalled MAC and MAC EMS handles (serials 366170 to 405673) must not be used; remove and dispose of the battery and return the device. One injury had been reported. Source
  • Use only McGRATH disposable blades and McGRATH 3.6 V batteries; blades are single use. Source
  • With the X3 blade, any camera or LED failure means removing the device and using an alternative; with a MAC blade only an LED failure requires this. Source
  • Not suitable near flammable mixtures. Never open sealed parts of the device. Source
  • Defective handles meant for destruction were stolen and sold in 2023; buy only through approved channels and check serials. Source

Where this note comes from.

Not covered: The device has no numbered error codes and Medtronic publishes no service manual; repairs go back to the distributor. The IFU read is for the EMS variant (300-200-000), which shares the handle design; the current next generation 301 IFU and its battery addendum were not opened. No FDA 510(k) summary was found under the McGRATH name.
