Volcano Eagle Eye Platinum RX digital IVUS catheter

Eagle Eye Platinum is Philips' digital IVUS catheter. A cylindrical transducer array near the tip images coronary and peripheral vessels in cross section. It is a single use rapid exchange catheter that plugs into a patient interface module on Philips (Volcano) s5, s5i, CORE and CORE Mobile systems. Service work centres on the imaging console and PIM; the catheter itself is mainly a matter of inspection and correct handling.

Safety

Safety warnings from the record.

  • In a stented vessel with poorly apposed struts, the catheter or wire can become entangled, leading to entrapment, tip separation or stent dislocation; never force advancement. Source
  • If wire and catheter bind inside the patient, remove both together and do not reuse the catheter. Source
  • The catheter is single use; reuse or resterilisation risks device separation, deformation, infection or failure to image. Source
  • It may not be safe for patients who cannot be properly anticoagulated or take antiplatelet therapy. Source

Not covered: No FDA recall naming Eagle Eye was found. The Philips product page was not opened directly; marketed figures (20 MHz, 20 mm imaging diameter) come via the IFU and a search summary, and the 20 MHz claim differs from the IFU's measured 18.6 MHz. Console and PIM error messages are in the imaging system manuals, which were not opened. MAUDE brand 'eagle eye' may include older Eagle Eye Gold catheters.
