GE HealthCare Corometrics 259cx Maternal/Fetal Monitor

The 259cx is the fully equipped member of GE's Corometrics 250cx Series, used on labour wards for antepartum and intrapartum monitoring. It records fetal heart rate by Doppler ultrasound or fetal ECG and uterine activity by tocotransducer or intrauterine catheter, and adds maternal blood pressure, pulse oximetry, ECG and optional temporal artery temperature. The sister 256cx is the fetal only version.

Recalls

Known FDA recalls.

  • Z-2154-20082008-05-05

Defective internal communication connector on models 256 and 259 may cause loss of telemetry.

    FDA record
  • Z-1159-20202019-09-11

Third party (Pacific Medical) serviced Nautilus toco transducers built with unvalidated non OEM parts; recall of the repairer's work, not GE's design.

Safety

Safety warnings from the record.

  • Transducers serviced with non OEM parts may fail to detect FHR or uterine activity accurately and FDA lists burns and interrupted monitoring as possible effects. Source
  • Loss of telemetry from the communication connector fault can leave the central station without the bedside trace. Source
  • The cleared intended use covers fetal and maternal vital sign monitoring only; FHR and UA alarms are options, so confirm which alarms a unit actually has. Source

Not covered: The 250cx operator manual (2036946-001) and service manual (2036947-001) are sold or distributed privately and no public copy could be opened, so there are no error codes, numeric recorder, display, battery or weight specs, and no part numbers. The datasheet is a reseller copy of GE marketing text. Two of the three recalls concern a third party repairer's transducers, not the monitor itself. MAUDE counts for 259cx are in single and low double figures and are trends only.
