Baxter Spectrum IQ Infusion System

Spectrum IQ is a single channel large volume pump that drives fluid from a bag through Baxter sets by linear peristaltic action. It runs a facility drug library built in the separate Dose IQ software and can be auto programmed from the electronic record over its wireless battery module. It is used for intravenous, arterial, subcutaneous and epidural infusion in hospital and outpatient areas.

Safety

Safety warnings from the record.

  • Incorrect set loading or a part cleared upstream occlusion can cause reduced or no delivery, sometimes without an alarm. Source
  • A mismatch between drug IDs in Dose IQ and the library on the pump was found in 2021, so libraries must be checked after updates. Source
  • When integrated with the EMR, the wireless battery module may fail to auto document infusion status, so charted data should be checked. Source
  • Baxter updated the IFU on cleaning practices in 2020; follow the current cleaning section only. Source

Not covered: The Spectrum IQ operator's and service manuals were not openly available, so alarm messages, error codes, flow accuracy, set lists and part numbers are not included. Recall records were read through openFDA because FDA's recall pages were throttling automated requests. There are 16 Spectrum IQ recall records; eight are listed. MAUDE counts are large and include summary reporting.
