What you'll be able to do

The job, done properly.

  • Explain the anaesthesia workstation, electrosurgery, staplers, insufflation, endoscopes, the surgical robot, IONM, IVUS and EP mapping from mechanism to failure
  • Commission theatre and interventional equipment interlock by interlock and as one system
  • Commission endoscope decontamination channel by channel, with traceability tested by a failed cycle
  • Investigate burns, fires, reload substitutions and infection clusters with evidence kept
  • Reopen theatres after works on validation evidence, service by service

The story

Medical City Hospital's theatres are being equipped and re-equipped: a new anaesthesia workstation in Theatre 3, an endoscopy decontamination unit, a hybrid theatre with a robot and C-arm, Theatre 7 for neurosurgery with its own monitoring, and Cath Lab 2 for the heart attack network. The learner is the theatre and interventional engineer.

Laila NasserTheatre and Interventional Engineering Lead · your mentor (a character in the track)
“Gas comes from the pipeline, is metered, picks up vapour, enters a circle system that removes carbon dioxide, and leaves through scavenging. Every stage has an interlock or an alarm, and each is proven under the conditions it will meet.”

Proof

Only evidence counts.

A step is done when there is evidence: a simulation score, a saved work document, a passed check or a signed observation. Opening a page never ticks anything.

  • Before and afterThe same baseline check on day one and in the final week, scored per competency.
  • Mastery, not attendanceEach competency has a mastery threshold. Below it, the track routes you to the named remediation items and a re-check; a week cannot be ticked complete by opening items alone.
  • The audit packYour weekly work documents and capstones, ready for a supervisor, an employer or an inspector.

The certificate

BMEssentia Certificate of Completion: Surgical & Interventional Technology

It names the track and the level you completed. Your portfolio holds the work behind it.

  • All 8 weeks' required items done at the learner's level
  • At least 8 of 9 competencies mastered
  • Final check at or above the level's pass mark
  • Every core surgical configuration's Guided learning journey completed (Labs 1, 11, 14, 34, 50, 51)
  • Capstone at 3 or above on every criterion, signed off by the manager or professor (institutions) or AI-assisted rubric review (individuals)

A theatre commissioning file

Commission one theatre or interventional room (a real one, or one from the track) end to end: services, each device's interlocks and safety tests, the systems tested together, open items and the go-live decision, with every value measured and sourced.

Evidence it gives: Commissioning evidence for theatre governance and estates.

A surgical incident investigation

Investigate one surgical incident (a real, anonymised one or one from the track): evidence kept, timeline from device and clinical records, root cause in the system, notice handling, controls with owners, and a look-back where patients may be affected.

Evidence it gives: Incident investigation evidence.

A theatre technology lifecycle plan

Plan the lifecycle of one theatre technology family (staplers and reloads, endoscopes and reprocessing, energy devices, or a robot and its instruments): procurement on running costs, traceability, maintenance and testing, recalls, and replacement.

Evidence it gives: Theatre technology lifecycle evidence.

Three levels

Easy, Medium or Hard.

A baseline check on day one places you, or you choose. The competencies are the same at every level; the support and the pressure change.

Easy

Baseline under 50%, or chosen · simulations at Foundation

Worked examples first; Foundation simulations with the coach; the extra and hard-only cases hidden.

Medium

Baseline 50% to 74%, or chosen · simulations at Practitioner

Practitioner difficulty; the troubleshooting cases shown.

Hard

Baseline 75% and above, or chosen · simulations at Expert

Expert difficulty, every case, timed boss week.
