What you'll be able to do

The job, done properly.

  • Explain each modality's physics from source to image
  • Accept X-ray, CT, MRI, ultrasound, SPECT, PET and DEXA equipment on measured evidence
  • Read artefacts and image faults as clues to subsystems
  • Work within radiation and MR safety, and investigate incidents through every failed layer
  • Run QA with baselines and tolerances across the modalities

The story

Medical City Hospital's imaging department is re-equipping: General Room 4 rebuilt for digital radiography, CT 2 for trauma, the MRI suite handed over, a new ultrasound fleet, a refurbished SPECT-CT and the first PET-CT suite. The learner is its imaging engineer.

Dr Kwame MensahMR Physicist and Radiation Protection Adviser · your mentor (a character in the track)
“Every X-ray image is a map of attenuation, made by a beam the engineer shapes: kV, filtration, collimation, the detector. Dose is invisible on a good-looking digital image, so it is measured, never assumed.”

Proof

Only evidence counts.

A step is done when there is evidence: a simulation score, a saved work document, a passed check or a signed observation. Opening a page never ticks anything.

  • Before and afterThe same baseline check on day one and in the final week, scored per competency.
  • Mastery, not attendanceEach competency has a mastery threshold. Below it, the track routes you to the named remediation items and a re-check; a week cannot be ticked complete by opening items alone.
  • The audit packYour weekly work documents and capstones, ready for a supervisor, an employer or an inspector.

The certificate

BMEssentia Certificate of Completion: Medical Imaging & Nuclear Medicine

It names the track and the level you completed. Your portfolio holds the work behind it.

  • All 8 weeks' required items done at the learner's level
  • At least 6 of 7 competencies mastered
  • Final check at or above the level's pass mark
  • Every core imaging configuration's Guided learning journey completed (Labs 2, 3, 4, 5, 36, 46, 68)
  • Capstone at 3 or above on every criterion, signed off by the manager or professor (institutions) or AI-assisted rubric review (individuals)

An imaging acceptance file

Accept one modality (a real one, or one from the track) end to end: delivery, documents, room and shielding, image quality, dose display, safety tests, open items and the go-live decision, with every value measured and sourced.

Evidence it gives: Acceptance evidence for regulators and the radiation protection adviser.

An imaging safety programme review

Review radiation and MR safety for one department: zones and access, local rules, dose monitoring, incident controls, and a look-back procedure after service changes.

Evidence it gives: Radiation and MR safety evidence.

A QA programme across modalities

Write the QA programme for a department's modalities: tests, baselines, tolerances, intervals, owners and the action on failure, with DEXA cross-calibration and ultrasound probe testing included.

Evidence it gives: Imaging QA evidence.

Three levels

Easy, Medium or Hard.

A baseline check on day one places you, or you choose. The competencies are the same at every level; the support and the pressure change.

Easy

Baseline under 50%, or chosen · simulations at Foundation

Worked examples first; Foundation simulations with the coach; the extra and hard-only cases hidden.

Medium

Baseline 50% to 74%, or chosen · simulations at Practitioner

Practitioner difficulty; the troubleshooting cases shown.

Hard

Baseline 75% and above, or chosen · simulations at Expert

Expert difficulty, every case, timed boss week.
